The Xbox Partner Preview gave us a sharper look at STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, the upcoming title from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. While the trailer teased intense combat and jazz-infused atmosphere, RGG Studio Executive Producer Masayoshi Yokoyama confirmed that the reveal barely scratches the surface of the team’s ambitions for the project.
The Scope of the Journey
The new footage reveals a narrative spanning five distinct historical periods in Japan, each tied to a unique city. Yokoyama emphasized the massive scale of this undertaking, noting that these settings include eras and locations rarely seen in modern gaming.
- Setting the Stage: The story unfolds across 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965.
- Dynamic Combat: The studio is debuting a fresh combat design, moving away from the combat in past Yakuza titles. Expect complex systems involving environmental interaction, grappling, and large-scale, one-on-many skirmishes.
- Atmosphere: The trailer highlighted the importance of music, specifically jazz, to the game’s identity. Yokoyama promises an extensive soundtrack beyond the tracks shown so far.
