Minecraft 2 Already Canceled, Minecraft Creator Notch Announces Abandonment of Spiritual Successor Development

The globally popular game “Minecraft” will not have a spiritual successor for the time being.

The original developer, Markus Persson (Notch), announced plans for “Minecraft 2” on January 4th.

However, just a few days later, he announced the abandonment of this plan.

On January 2nd, Persson asked his 3.6 million followers whether they would prefer the creation of “Minecraft 2” or a Roguelike turn-based first-person dungeon exploration game titled “Levers and Chests.” Ultimately, “Minecraft 2” received the majority of votes in the poll.

The intellectual property rights of “Minecraft” are owned by Microsoft, which also owns Mojang Studios, the developer of the game. Therefore, the new game cannot directly use the name “Minecraft 2,” but it can be referred to as a spiritual successor.

A few days later, Persson suddenly changed his mind, stating: “After talking to my colleagues in the office, it seems we are going to make ‘Levers and Chests’ after all! The direct reason is that PC Gamer said it looks interesting, haha. Yes, I still like PC Gamer.

He also mentioned: “Believe me, the spiritual successor to ‘Minecraft’ is far less fun than this dungeon adventure game. Spiritual successors are usually just a bit of a nostalgic rehash that makes people feel a bit sad.”

Persson recently shared some development screenshots of the game “Levers and Chests,” showing that the game has a rather retro pixel art style, though the design is currently being adjusted.
