Retrofiction Games revealed new details for its upcoming 2D survival-horror title, “Dead of Darkness,” ahead of its launch on PC via Steam on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
“Dead of Darkness” immerses players in a 2D survival-horror action adventure steeped in cosmic dread. The game features a 12-hour campaign complete with a rich narrative, a foreboding atmosphere, deep lore, and challenging puzzles.
Players can choose from four difficulty settings at launch: Very Easy, Easy, Moderate, and Hard.
Upon completing the campaign, players can unlock additional difficulty levels, Very Hard and In The Dead of Darkness, as well as a New Game Plus mode.
Steam achievements will be fully supported at launch.
The game uses pixel-perfect, sprite-based art, brought to life with high-definition anime-style illustrations, atmospheric lighting, and detailed sound design.

The narrative will also be enhanced by two hours of fully voiced cutscenes, performed by an international cast including Bradley Gareth, Abigail Turner, Paul Moran, Alex Mai, Alice Himora, Ginger Sue, Chris Sharpes, Pixie Willow, Katie Aitken, and Jericho George.
The voiceover is in English, but the game will feature full German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Simplified Chinese localization for all in-game narrative and UI text.
Key Features of Dead of Darkness:
- Multi-layered Narrative: Players will meet over 15 memorable characters, each with their own stories connected to the terrible secrets of Velvet Island.
- Challenging Survival-Horror: Resources will be scarce, inventories will be limited, and danger will lurk around every corner.
- Intense Hallucinations: Each enemy encounter will take a toll on the player’s mental state, with stronger hallucinations appearing as the mental state lowers, blurring reality and fiction.
- Relentless Enemies: Players will face 13 different enemies, some of which will stalk them relentlessly, requiring them to fight, run, or outsmart their foes.
- Detective Gameplay: Players will search their environments, inspect items, and read documents to unlock clues that reveal hidden troves and secret passageways.
Dead of Darkness will launch on PC via Steam on Thursday, January 23, 2025. A demo is available on Steam, and players can also wishlist the game.
Eastasiasoft will bring the game to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox consoles at a later date.
