Nionetix Unveils "Frozen Ship": A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Adventure

Nionetix has revealed Frozen Ship, a new survival game blending adventure, strategy, and base building.

The title will launch in early access on Steam, Epic Games, and VK Play in August 2025.

Demo details

  • Closed Demo: Nionetix will grant access to a select group in April 2025, allowing early players to test the game and share exclusive feedback.
  • Public Demo: Players can explore Frozen Ship during Steam Next Fest from June 9 to June 16, 2025.

What Is Frozen Ship?

Nionetix crafts Frozen Ship as a narrative-driven survival adventure. Players captain the Steinfish, a mobile city on wheels, navigating a frozen, post-apocalyptic world.

The game merges first-person open-world exploration with city management, drawing inspiration from The Long Dark’s survival tension and Frostpunk’s strategic depth.

Players manage a crew, craft items, build structures, and make critical decisions while exploring a procedurally generated landscape packed with stories and challenges.

Key features

  • Survival: Players endure harsh conditions with limited resources.
  • Open World: A procedurally generated expanse offers endless exploration.
  • Crafting: Players create tools, weapons, and structures.
  • First-Person: The game immerses players in the captain’s perspective.
  • City Builder & Colony Sim: Players construct and oversee a moving settlement.
  • Post-Apocalyptic: A frozen Earth sets the stage for survival.
  • Story-Driven Adventure: A rich narrative drives the journey.
  • Dynamic Events: Random events shape the gameplay experience.

The lore

In 1971, Norwegian scientists spotted an asteroid expected to pass Earth safely. They miscalculated.

The asteroid struck the East China Sea in September, unleashing earthquakes, a 10-km-high tsunami, and wildfires that razed 90% of cities.

Dust blocked the sun, killing plants and animals, while the impact shifted Earth’s orbit, plunging temperatures to -20°C at the equator by 1980. Survivors fled to northern Europe.

A Swedish mountain city rose in 1983, housing 100,000 before collapsing by 1987 amid famine and riots. By 1989, only 7,000-12,000 humans remained.

In 1996, settlers founded Saint Alice near a volcano on the Finland-Sweden border. As it cooled by 2004, they built the Steinfish—a massive ship completed in 2007.

A crew of 20, led by you, now searches for a new home.

Gameplay highlights

  • Changing World: Procedural generation ensures each playthrough differs, though the core story stays consistent. A survival mode awaits those who finish the campaign.
  • Events: Difficulty dictates whether events aid or doom your crew—new workers or hidden caches can shift the odds.
  • Management: Players oversee all ship operations, from building to research, with every choice affecting crew morale.
  • Crew: Players assign tasks to a loyal team who explore, cook, craft, or construct alongside you.
  • World Exploration: Players gather resources and complete tasks in a treacherous landscape, returning to the ship before nightfall.

Frozen Ship promises a gripping mix of survival and strategy.
